Govt's swine flu advisory on trips abroad worries travel agents
The Union health ministry advisory that urges Indians to avoid international travel as a precaution against swine flu has family travellers worried and the travel industry more so.
The advisory came on Monday, after local health authorities said they were treating around a dozen people for the illness, officially called A(H1N1) influenza, although there have been no deaths in India.
This happens to be the most suitable period for families to travel, as children have school vacations. Families are worried about the health consequences, especially when travelling with their kids.
“There has been 5 to 10 per cent drop in bookings. The pandemic scare is getting bigger and people are getting more and more worried. This particular time is mostly for family travel. So, when people are travelling with families and children, they tend to get worried,” said Rajjinder Rai, President, Travel Agenta Association of India.
“Cancellations have already started. We can see big-scale cancellations due to the pandemic fear.”he added.
“People are definitely concerned. We are receiving a lot of calls from worried customers in our call centres. Customers are enquiring about the situation. Customers are taking time to confirm their bookings and thinking over it. Families are worried about the health consequences. So, rather than going to Singapore or the US, travellers are opting for Kerala to spend their vacation,” said Diwakar Pareek, senior manager, International flights, Make my Trip.
“We are afraid if the situation remains the same, then we may see cancellations rise. Among all the destinations, ticket bookings for United States has been most affected,” added Pareek.
However, some travel portals are yet to see an impact in terms of bookings and cancellations. “We are yet to receive any official notification. It is very early to comment. So far no cancellations have come in and there is no drop in bookings,” said Bhawna Agarwal, Head of Air Business at Yatra.com.
Noel Swain, VP, Marketing, of Cleartrip.com, also said their portal is yet to see any impact of the advisory on travels.
Delay in Amarnath yatra set to spark another row
A fresh row is brewing in Kashmir over the delay in this year's Amarnath yatra. The Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) blames inclement weather for the delay, but the Shri Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti (SASS) and the VHP-backed Amarnath Yatra Niyas (AYN), feel the Omar government is dithering under pressure from separatists. AYN wants the yatra to begin on June 15 come what may.
Even BJP, which rode high on last year's Amarnath crisis, says the government was deliberately delaying the yatra.
The yatra was to take off on June 7, but was rescheduled to June 15 due to the weather. The board says incessant rains and snowfall have hampered track clearance. Some sectors continue to be under 5-6 ft snow.
"Governor NN Vohra, who is the SASB chairman, is scheduled to visit the shrine and the two base camps and carry out an aerial reconnaissance on June 11 to assess the timeline for restoration and setting up of required facilities," a board spokesman said.
"We support the SASB, but are sceptical of the government, which is succumbing to pressure from communal forces," state BJP president Ashok Khajuria said.
"SASB says there is a lot of snow on the tracks, but there is no independent confirmation. If the yatra is postponed once more, it will be construed that the government is giving in to pressure from Hurriyat hawks. They had said that the yatra period should be curtailed to 15 days," Brig (retd) Suchet Singh, officiating convener of the Samiti, said.
AYN wants the yatra to begin on June 15 come what may. "If the yatra is postponed, we will appeal to the pilgrims to reach Jammu and begin the pilgrimage on their own,"AYN chief Rama Kant Dubey said.
